Al Shifa International Conference on 'Revolutionizing Higher Education: AI Driven Policies, Practices and Partnerships' to be held from 21 - 23 January 2025.       
‘Book Reviews’, an event, was organized as a part of the observance of the International Migrants Day (18 December ‘21) by the Department of English at Seminar Hall on 20 December 2021. As the day fell on a holiday, the observance was held on the next working day. The programme commenced at 10.20 AM. Ms. Fathima Rana, I B.A. Functional English, did anchoring of the programme. Ms. Renjitha. K. R., Assistant Professor in English and class tutor of first B. A. Functional English, coordinated the event. A formal welcome note was given by Ms. Arshida. A. K., I B.A. Functional English. Principal’s address followed in which Dr. Babu. P. K. spoke on the message of Migrants Day and said that the book review presentations would inspire the listeners to read more about migration and the related issues.
Ms. Shibna. K. of I B. A. Functional English presented a review on the book The Last Girl by Nadia Murad. She spoke on the plight of the Yazidi community in the light of the autobiographical book by Murad. She went on to explain that the trials and tribulations Murad experienced as a slave of ISIS in Iraq are incomparable. She explained how Murad escaped from captivity and reached a safe haven. She added that after the publication of the book, the pathetic plight of the Yazidis was brought to the forefront of popular discourse and this resulted in the betterment of the life of this ethnic minority in Iraq.
Amaya. K. T. of I B. A. Functional English reviewed Catherine Chung’s Forgotten Country. She brought into perspective the life of Korean migrants in the United States of America in the light of the book. The novel depicts the story of a South Korean migrant family who have escaped from political persecution in their home country. Amaya elaborated on the characters of the novel and the cultural dilemma they face in the new country. She observed that the position of Korean migrants is relatively safer in terms of job opportunities and social integration in the US.

After the reviews, Ms. Sabina and Ms. Renjitha. K. R., Assistant Professors in English spoke on the topic of migration and the significance of such student initiatives. Ms. Saritha. K., Head, Department of English, also spoke on the occasion emphasising on the topic and appreciated the students for organising such an event. Ms. Rinsha Sherin, I B. A. English, offered a formal vote of thanks. The event came to an end at 11.00 AM.
